Photovoltaic Solar Power

Information on photovoltaic panels/systems for “Contractors Building Supply, Inc.”

  • Most high wattage panels are 5′x2.5′ @ 175-200 watts per panel
  • Typical-20′x5 panels to achieve 1000 watts in a single row or 10′x10′ plot for two rows
  • It is common to add one or two panels if someone really wants to produce 1000 watts
  • Collectors are affected by sunlight and temperature . The hotter the panels get the lower efficiency. In Michigan’s lower temperatures this helps make up for the low light in the winter months
  • Cost-a high wattage panel costs $800-$1300 per panel depending on its power rating
  • Many panels today come with MC connectors making wiring easy
  • Grid tied inverters have a minimum Voltage in order to operate. There are only a few inverters available that run below 150 Volts DC
  • The minimum amount of panels is around 4 to power a grid tied inverter
  • Mounting hardware is superb these days. Flush mounted panels are the most affordable if placing collectors on the roof. Roof boots are made for the racks and for making roof wire penetrations. Hardware is stainless or aluminum including all of the bolts
